Why Self-Talk Matters More Than You Think

You might not think your internal dialogue matters. We all experience emotional ups and downs and have strengths and weaknesses. So it might seem normal that you would doubt yourself at times.

You would be correct. It is natural and normal to have self-limiting beliefs. You also experience times when you are your biggest fan. You speak to yourself positively. Regardless of your story, your inner dialogue is extremely important.

    Self-Talk Fuels Self-Perception

Confidence is impossible without a great self-image. Where does that self-image come from? It comes from seeing the results you produce and believing in yourself. You feel good about who you are when you create a positive outcome or achieve a goal. Sometimes you feel you can do great things even if you haven’t accomplished everything you want.

The individual who practices empowering self-talk believes that they can make great things happen, even if they have never done so before. They don't need proof that, because they have accomplished something in the past, they can do it again. Their confidence comes from uplifting self-talk in the face of challenges and their limited past successes.

Your internal dialogue profoundly impacts your thoughts and emotions, which lead to your actions. You shape the world around you because of the story you tell yourself. When you embrace the idea that you are capable and worthy of a great life through positive self-talk, you begin to see the manifestation of that thought in reality.

Unfortunately, the opposite is also true. Talk down to yourself, and down is where you are headed.

Your Inner Dialogue Changes Your Brain

Brain scans show that repetitive thoughts change the physiology of your brain. When you express an idea, you develop new neural connections. The more a thought is repeated, the stronger those connections become.

This is wonderful news. You can program your brain for success, happiness, and fulfillment by having a more positive and empowering internal dialogue. By changing your inner dialogue, you can talk yourself into productive actions that become automatic habits.

High achievers in all fields use repetitive self-talk to guide them toward success. Repeated thoughts are reinforced, and you begin believing you can make those thoughts a reality. Since your thoughts guide your actions and your actions influence the world around you, you should view positive self-talk as a tool for shaping your world and enjoying great experiences.
