Five Easy Tips for Improving Your Focus Today

focus habits mindset productivity Feb 16, 2024

Focus can lead to fulfillment. That might sound like a dramatic overstatement of the rewards of being dialed in. It isn't. When you focus your energy, your time, and your attention on something, it can dramatically improve. Focus is just as effective at improving your productivity and experiences in your personal life as it is on the job.

Humans are naturally designed to be more effective, happier, and more fulfilled when our efforts are focused. You can shorten the path to goal achievement, get more of what you want out of life, and experience more success and fewer failures when you direct your intention on a task or activity.

Here are five easy-to-implement tips to help you benefit from a better focus.

1 – Clean Up, Organize, and De-Clutter

We understand if you are frowning right now. Cleaning is only fun for some people – and I am not one of them! You tend towards less organization rather than having a place for everything, with everything in its place. It takes time and energy to clear up clutter.

This is one of those situations where something that might be less than enjoyable can improve your life. Cleaning, organizing, and de-cluttering your home and work environments removes needless distractions. This improves your focus and the results you get from your efforts.

I have personally been more intentional here in my office and make sure I do this at least weekly so that the daily decluttering is easy.

2 – Break Big Goals into Several Mini-Goals

Big dreams require big goals. If you constantly think about the results, the process can be intimidating. Break big goals into smaller ones that lead to achieving that bigger dream. Then, focus on hitting those smaller milestones one at a time. If your goal has a one year deadline, that will not be motivating enough to take daily action. When you take the time to break it down to the daily tasks that you can do hit that goal, you are much more likely to reach your goal.

The brain loves reward and taking small steps and moving closer helps to give you that reward and it also helps to give you that internal motivation and belief that you can do this.

3 – Get Plenty of Rest and Hydrate Regularly

Dehydration is one of the most common health issues people suffer from, and they usually don't realize it's happening. Many people struggle to get seven or eight hours of sleep every night. That's a shame because staying hydrated throughout the day and enjoying restful sleep at night can make you a focus powerhouse.

Most people need about 4 – 6 cups of water a day but it varies based on several factors including health conditions, medications and activity level. There are so many benefits to drinking water. Most importantly it helps you think. Your brain is 75% water so drinking helps with better cognition, improved memory and robust brain health.

4 – Focus on Completion before Advancement

Multitasking can seriously hinder accomplishing anything. The best productivity comes from tackling and completing one task at a time. This makes focus simple since you never engage in more than one activity.

5 –  Tie Your Goals to Your Values

A meat lover who hates vegetables knows he should eat more veggies for health reasons. He may find it hard to focus on eating plant-based food.

He may not do it often if he only tells himself to eat more vegetables. However, if he ties his “eat more veggies” goal to an important value he has, the focus becomes easier. He moves closer to success.

Tie goals to your values, and you will be fine with focusing on their achievement.
